Hollywood's Mind Vacuum

Watch an awards show and you're inundated with speech after self-aggrandizing speech about how we're using too much gas, destroying the environment, turn on your A/C and you're killing a koala. What celebrities don't talk about is the $75,000 awards goodie bags tucked behind their $6,000 Manolo Blahniks (those are shoes, for anyone sporting Keds.)Speaking of awards, a movie Al Gore made about global warming and energy conservation just won an Oscar.

In his acceptance speech, Gore failed to mention that he uses 20 times the national average of electricity to power his Nashville mansion.Granted, mansions probably require more energy to heat than studio apartments. (Especially if Gore sprung for the Olympic-sized, dollar-shaped pool.)

But for all his hand wringing about polar ice caps, you'd think Al would know the phone number of a solar panel installer. At least Gore is a former vice president with legitimate political credentials. Seems like any celebrity chucklehead can grab a microphone and tell us "average folk" how to think and act.Cameron Diaz appeared on "Oprah" in 2004 and urged viewers, "If you think that rape should be legal, then don't vote."I remember the 2004 election.I don't remember the "pro-rape" campaign buttons.

Days before the 2000 election, Ben Affleck mugged for anyone with a camera, admonishing us all to "get the vote out." Between Ben and me, only one of us voted for a president that year.In fact, Ben never bothered to vote in state or federal elections in 2000, 1998, 1996 and 1994, according to thesmokinggun.comAsk a typical celebrity what they think about adoring fans and, without coming right out and saying it, you can read between the lines:
